Feature Article - Asset Performance for Profitability

Mainstream Maintenance publications consistently highlight why maintenance makes good business sense but the message had not been widely understood by business management. In this article, Angelo Agresti of Asset Capability Management offers some reasons why the message has not been understood, and suggests a framework which can be used to realise the benefits of good maintenance practice. You will find this article at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/SAM_Origins.pdf. Note that you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file.

Feature Article - CMMS Software for Hire

There has been a trend in recent years towards the use of remote software services through Application Service Providers. These are companies who make software applications available via the Internet to users who, rather than buying software, pay rental fees for it. This article from Bryan Weir of Perspective CMMS outlines the advantages, disadvantages, and key aspects to consider when looking at using this type of software. You can read it at
http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/CMMS_Software_for_Hire.pdf. Once again, you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file.

Feature Article - The SAMI Asset Healthcare Triangle Series: Stage 1

This is a compilation of 12 articles written by Dave Army of Strategic Asset Management Inc. (SAMI) outlining the components of Stage 1 of the SAMI Asset Heathcare triangle. It covers Identification of Work, Work Prioritization, Long Range Scheduling, Look Ahead Scheduling, Materials Management, Preventive Maintenance, Planners, The Work Plan, Work Execution, Work Closure, CMMS and Metrics. Read the article at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/SAMI_Triangle_Stage_1.pdf. Again, you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file.

Feature Article - Establishing Continuous Asset Management Improvement

The new British Standard PAS-55 defines what a physical asset management system needs to include, but how do companies stack up against this model? This article looks at the best practices, the practical challenges and some of the key enablers required to put the whole jigsaw together. The article is written by John Woodhouse of the Woodhouse Partnership, and can be read at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/articles/Continuous_Improvement_Asset_Management.pdf. Yet again, note that you will require the free Adobe Acrobat reader to be able to view this file.

2004 Maintenance Salary Survey

The 5th annual Plant Maintenance Resource Center maintenance salary survey closed on March 15, 2004 with more than 450 responses. We are currently collating and analysing the results, and will publish a full report in the next edition of M-News.

Maintenance Management Benchmarking Survey

In the light of the strength of response to our Maintenance Salary Survey, and in response to a request from a site visitor, we have loaded up another quick, 7 question survey for you to participate in. This time, it focuses on some key aspects of your Maintenance Management program - to assist you in comparing yourselves with other organizations. You can complete the survey, and view the results to date, at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/survey.shtml. The survey will remain open until May 15, 2004.

Site Feature - Maintenance News Page

We have recently launched our new Maintenance News page at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/maintenance_news/index.shtml. Similar to our new Jobs Board, the new News page has some significant benefits over our previous News page, including:

  • Improved ability to create formatted text entries
  • The possibility to upload documents to the website for visitors to download
  • The capability for visitors to edit or delete their own postings
  • Search capabilities
  • The capability to post News postings directly to the page via email

There are also some behind the scenes administrative improvements as well, such as better capability to prevent unauthorised or inappropriate postings to the page, the ability to automatically archive old entries etc.

Visit our new board at http://www.plant-maintenance.com/maintenance_news/index.shtml. For help in using the new News Board, visit http://www.plant-maintenance.com/maintenance_news/help.shtml.

On the Lighter Side - Engineering Humor

"Clothes are the lowest priority for an engineer, assuming the basic thresholds for temperature and decency have been satisfied. If no appendages are freezing or sticking together, and if no genitalia or mammary glands are swinging around in plain view, then the objective of clothing has been met. Anything else is a waste."

I hope you have enjoyed this newsletter. All feedback, comments and contributions to future editions are very welcome (as are enquiries about contributions to, and sponsorship of, this newsletter).
